Dr. Kailyn Turner (Née Jones)

CHILD, ADOLESCENT, AND ADULT PSYCHOLOGIST

You can do this. I can help.

I am a registered Psychologist with The College of Psychologists of Ontario. My primary area of practice is child and adolescent psychological assessment and treatment. I also see adults for psychological assessment and treatment.

Enhancing well-being

Time is one of the most valuable things you have and choosing to spend it with me means a lot. I find it a great privilege to join children, youth, caregivers, and adults in their journey to enhance well-being. I believe thoughts, emotions, and behaviours can change, and I am here to help clients address patterns that no longer serve them. I aim to bring a real, down-to-earth, lighthearted warmth to my work. My top priority is developing a genuine and caring connection with you. I believe you already have a strong ability to overcome barriers and generate solutions that fit your life. As a Psychologist, my role is to ask curious questions and offer new ideas. Together, we will discover what inner experiences and external factors are getting in the way of you living your values.

Evidence-based and responsive

I use a variety of evidence-based strategies to help clients approach challenging topics and build new, personalized tools for coping. I am trained in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Mindfulness-Based techniques. I also have experience using Floortime, which is a relationship-based therapy for children and youth to encourage progress towards developmental milestones through play and other creative outlets. I work from a developmental-ecological perspective, meaning I consider individual qualities of clients within the wider environments that influence them. I also take a whole-brain perspective, where I promote fundamental concepts about the brain to assist clients to understand various behaviours and respond more skillfully to difficult situations.

Honouring diversity

I have specialized training and a keen interest in supporting neurodiverse clients. I believe everyone deserves to live fulfilling, meaningful lives, and I am committed to neurodiversity-affirming services that support regulation, acknowledge and build on individual strengths, presume competence, and honour multiple forms of communication, play, learning, and relating to others.

I have expertise in conducting comprehensive psycho-educational, developmental, and psychological assessments. Through these assessments, I can help answer your questions about learning, development, and mental health. I aim to understand each client’s full profile of unique strengths and needs, and I use this data to offer tailored strategies to support them. I have familiarity with a broad range of psychological conditions such as global developmental delay, intellectual disability, autism, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, learning disabilities, and giftedness. I also have experience evaluating and treating anxiety, depression, emotion regulation challenges, obsessions and intrusive thoughts, anger, disruptive behaviours, caregiver burnout, and relationship stress.

My details

I received my PhD in School and Applied Child Psychology from the University of Calgary. I trained in numerous settings including various school boards, a university teaching clinic, and an early intervention centre. My doctoral research focused on executive functioning skills such as working memory, cognitive flexibility, and planning in youth with chronic pain. I also completed a postdoctoral research position with the ENHANCE Lab at the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute. This research examined clinical service needs of neurodiverse youth with co-occurring mental health conditions, especially during times of mental health crisis.

I have presented research at national and international conferences and published articles in peer-reviewed journals. I have also taught university-level courses in child development, mental health in children and adolescents, trauma and resilience in children, theories of individual learning, and school and clinic-based assessment and intervention.
